As of early May, 6.4 million sheep and goats are grazing on pastures across Turkmenistan, with 5.6 million belonging to private farms, according to national agricultural officials. The Tagtabazar, Sakarçäge and Ýolöten districts of Mary velayat lead the country in flock numbers, according to Turkmenistan’s official media.
The annual increase in livestock numbers is due to a successful lambing campaign that began this year in March in the southern regions. Herders in these areas were among the first to fulfill their obligations to produce healthy offspring, thanks to the diligent work of shepherds and specialists. Their many years of experience and professionalism ensure a high level of offspring survival and the health of the young animals.
Following the lambing season, the spring shearing period for sheep traditionally takes place from mid-April through early May. The campaign is carefully planned, with active support from the State Livestock Association, which organizes training seminars and skill competitions for shearers. These initiatives promote the exchange of experience and ensure an efficient and well-organized shearing process every year.
Currently, shepherds are paying special attention to the care and veterinary treatment of the young lambs. At the end of summer, an important task awaits — selecting the strongest lambs to form new flocks. Knowledge, experience and resources enable livestock breeders to confidently look to the future and ensure continued success in the development of Turkmenistan’s sheep industry.
