Director of the Turkmenistan project office of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) Mergen Kepbanov met Monday with Ashyrmurat Muhamedov, director of the Amu Darya Basin Water Organization, to discuss cooperation on the sustainable management of the Amu Darya River’s water resources, CAREC said.
The meeting was held as part of preparations for a new regional program of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Green Climate Fund titled “Sustainable Landscapes and Climate-Resilient Livelihoods in Central Asia: A Transboundary Approach to Climate Action.”
The sides also discussed prospects for cooperation within the emerging project, including climate change adaptation and interstate coordination in the Amu Darya basin.
Information was presented on the activities of the Amu Darya Basin Water Organization, an interstate body responsible for managing the river’s water resources.
The organization’s core functions include water allocation, oversight of withdrawal limits, flow management, water-use monitoring, seasonal forecasting and coordination during low-water periods.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the sides confirmed readiness to continue cooperation in preparing and implementing the future regional project.
