Turkmenistan is considering participation in a project to lay a power cable along the seabed of the Caspian Sea for electricity exports. A representative of Turkmenenergo State Electric Power Corporation under the Ministry of Energy of Turkmenistan announced the plans on the sidelines of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku on Monday, Report reported.
According to the Turkmenenergo representative, construction of a 1,574-MW combined-cycle power plant is continuing in Turkmenbashi. In the future, the facility could become one of the main sources of electricity generation for export supplies.
The report said that after the plant is commissioned, the possibility of supplying electricity to Azerbaijan through an undersea cable along the Caspian seabed, with further exports to other countries, is being considered.
The Turkmenenergo representative emphasized that the project is regularly discussed within the framework of intergovernmental commissions between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan. A final decision on the project has not yet been made.
According to the representative, implementation of the initiative could be economically beneficial for all participants, while Azerbaijan is considered an important transit route for further exports of Turkmen electricity.
