The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with Turkmenistan's Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, has completed the installation of two solar photovoltaic systems at the Yoloten District Hospital in Mary province. The combined capacity of the systems is 30 kW, UNDP reported on Thursday.

The solar power systems will provide the medical facility with renewable electricity, improving energy efficiency, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources and ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of critical healthcare services.

Each system is equipped with battery energy storage, providing backup power for up to 12 hours in the event of electricity outages. This will help maintain operations at key departments, including the neonatal intensive care unit, maternity ward, clinical laboratory, hemodialysis unit and operating theaters.

According to estimates, the solar panels will generate about 46 MWh of electricity annually, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 25 metric tons of CO₂ each year.

The initiative was implemented as part of efforts to introduce sustainable energy solutions in social infrastructure and strengthen the resilience of the healthcare system to power supply disruptions.
