Farmers in Lebap Looking to Increase Walnut Yields

The healing properties of walnuts, the core of which is slightly similar to the structure of the human brain, are very diverse. In his treatise “The Wealth of Khorezm”, 12th century Eastern physician Sayyed Ismail al-Jurjani described the properties of walnuts as the recommended means for disinfecting the body.

From a medical point of view, it has been scientifically proven to date that walnut neutralizes the acidity of the stomach and improves its performance, makes up for the lack of cobalt and iron in the body. Also, medical scientists have determined that the walnut normalizes the functioning of the vessels of the brain, thereby improving the human's creativity.

Turkmen farmers make great efforts to multiply such an important fruit Turkmenistan and have shown by their example that walnuts can ripen not only in the mountains, but also in other field lands.

In the village of Chohpetde in Halach district of the Lebap province, the landowner Hudayberdi Tangryberdiyev spent many years in his farm conducting various tests on growing walnuts. He studied the features of types of walnuts with a thin and thick shell and found out the types of fertilizers that have a beneficial effect on walnut cultivation. He also achieved walnut cultivation in neighboring horticultural plots.

Begench Jumayev, another farmer in the village of Astanababa in Kerki etrap of the same province, also conducted various kinds of experiments to increase the yield of walnuts in his farm. He applied fertilizers containing iron, copper, magnesium and potassium without damaging the root system, which stretches deep into the ground. As a result, after 3-4 years, the yield of nuts increased.

"The walnut kernel contains 45-77% of oil, which is a medicine against many diseases. Walnut nutritional value is 7 times higher than cow meat. The calorie content of one kilogram of nuts is equivalent to 10 kilograms of chicken meat," Jumayev says.

Centuries-old large walnut trees can be found in Hojaypil and Koyten villages in the Koytendag district of the Lebap province.

The hard-growing 2-3-year-old walnut tree is only one meter. However, the root system during this period reaches 80-90 centimeters. The tree bears fruit in 6-7 years.

In Turkmenistan, walnut trees mostly grow at the Sünt-Hasardag state reserve, Kopetdag mountains, and along the Koytendag creeks.
