Entrepreneur Batyr Ravshanov harvests 50 kg of strawberries per day in his greenhouse in Ak Bugday etrap of Turkmenistan’s Ahal velayat.
According to Rysgal newspaper’s Monday issue, the Turkmen entrepreneur has been growing Albion variety of the berries on a 0.6-hectare greenhouse since 2017. The seedlings of the strawberries were imported from Turkey.
This variety is suitable for cultivation in a humid environment and yields a rich harvest all year round, according to the newspaper.
In the warm season, the greenhouse yields up to 200 kg of strawberries daily. A medium-sized berry with a sour taste does not lose freshness for a long time and is easy to transport.
Rawshanov’s greenhouse currently employs dozens of people. Collected strawberries are then packed by Ter Önüm Economic Society in special containers under the Tudana trademark and sent to retail stores of the country.
Most of the world's strawberry production comes from China, with 3.8 million tons produced in 2019, representing 42% of the berries grown globally. After China, the sequence of countries growing this fragrant berry is the USA, Mexico, Egypt and Turkey. The volume of strawberries grown in these countries varies from 415 thousand to 1.4 million tons per year.
