The meeting of co-chairs of the Russian-Turkmen intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

Russia and Turkmenistan have signed an economic cooperation program for 2021-2023 during a meeting of co-chairs of the bilateral intergovernmental commission in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat on Thursday, the country’s official media reports.

The meeting of co-chairs of the Russian-Turkmen intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation was attended by heads and delegates of numerous governmental bodies, including ministries and state agencies, as well as business circles from the two countries.

The Turkmen delegation was led by the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers Serdar Berdimuhamedov, while the Russian side was headed by Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk.

The main topics of the meeting were the current state and ways of building the potential of bilateral interaction and the results of the activities on the practical implementation of the previously reached agreements.

The meeting participants stressed that Russia is one of Turkmenistan’s strategic partners, and the country’s government views boosting bilateral ties as one of its priorities.

The fuel and energy sector, transport and communications, gas chemicals industry, geology, construction, financial and banking sector were named among the promising areas of bilateral cooperation.

The officials also addressed humanitarian cooperation issues, primarily in the fields of education and healthcare.

As a result of the meeting, the officials signed the Program of Economic Cooperation between the Government of Turkmenistan and the Government of the Russian Federation for 2021-2023.

The trade turnover between Turkmenistan and Russia over the first eight months of 2021 hit $1.086 billion, increasing 12.5% year-on-year.
