Uzbekistan supplies Kyrgyzstan with electricity generated from natural gas from Turkmenistan, Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan and Ministry of Energy and Industry of the Kyrgyz Republic said in a joint statement issued on Wednesday.
The statement said that in accordance with the protocol of March 11, 2021, the mutual supply of electricity is carried out in accordance with the schedules approved by the parties.
"Taking into account the low water level in Central Asia, in order to prevent the Toktogul reservoir from running out to a critical level, in accordance with the agreements between the economic entities of the parties, electric power produced from Turkmen gas was supplied to Kyrgyzstan," the statement stated.
At the same time, in accordance with the agreements on a contractual basis, electricity transits from Turkmenistan to Kyrgyzstan through the energy system of Uzbekistan on the basis of the capacity of energy systems, the ministries noted.
The statement also stated that that the economic entities of the countries signed the relevant contracts aimed at ensuring the transit of Turkmen electricity in 2023.
Toktogul reservoir feeds the Syr Darya River.
Turkmenistan has been exporting electricity to Kyrgyzstan since August 2021. In 2023, Kyrgyzstan is expected to receive 2 billion kWh of Turkmen electricity in transit through Uzbekistan.
