An international expert meeting on improving energy interconnectivity will take place in Ashgabat on October 16-17, as reported by Turkmenistan's official media on Wednesday.
The meeting will focus on the importance of stable energy links to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7, which aims to ensure access to affordable and reliable energy for all.
The event is based on UN Resolution 78/149, which highlights the significance of energy interconnectivity for sustainable development. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) will organize two key sessions: "Regional Integration and Cooperation" and "Diversification and Energy Security."
A major topic of discussion will be cross-border energy system integration as a way to accelerate the transition to clean energy and reduce costs. According to experts, achieving this will require increasing annual investments in energy infrastructure to $680 billion by 2030.
Additionally, participants will exchange best practices in planning and managing integrated energy systems. The meeting will be held in a hybrid format, including parallel workshops and a special session by the UN Counter-Terrorism Unit on protecting critical energy infrastructure.
