Political consultations between Turkmenistan and Japan took place on January 27, 2025, in Tokyo. Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Gurbanov led the Turkmen delegation, while Masaki Ishikawa, the Special Representative of the Japanese Foreign Ministry for Central Asia and the Caucasus, headed the Japanese delegation, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

The parties discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and emphasized the importance of cooperation within international organizations, including the UN. They paid special attention to the upcoming Central Asia + Japan summit and advanced Turkmenistan's initiative to declare 2025 as the International Year of Peace and Trust.

The negotiations covered key areas of trade and economic cooperation, including projects in the oil and gas, transportation, and energy sectors. Participants recognized the important role of the joint committee in coordinating economic ties.

The meeting also addressed Turkmenistan's participation in the World Expo EXPO-2025 in Osaka and the organization of the country's National Day during the event.

Ahmet Gurbanov also held separate meetings with Japan's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hisayuki Fuji, and Hiroyuki Tsubai, a member of the Board of Directors, Executive Vice President of Itochu Corporation, President of the company 'Machines and Equipment,' and Chairman of the Japan-Turkmenistan Committee for Economic Cooperation.
