Iran’s Director General of Railways, Jabbar Ali Zakeri, on Tuesday called for increased rail exchange between Iran and Turkmenistan through connections with Iran’s southern ports. The proposal was made during a meeting with Turkmenistan’s Minister of Railway Transport, Mammet Akmammedov.
According to IRNA, Zakeri outlined several transit railway corridors and emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in the rail sector.
He also highlighted the need to expand the two countries' share in regional transit through the southern Caspian Sea coast. Zakeri announced a new agreement with China’s railways to increase the number of freight trains, with 300 trains scheduled to arrive in Iran from China by the end of the year. A return route for transporting Iranian export goods is currently under development.
Zakeri further underscored the strategic importance of the future Chabahar–Zahedan railway line in facilitating transport along the North–South Corridor. He noted Belarus's interest in accessing Iran’s and Pakistan’s southern ports via Iran’s railway network and invited Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan to take advantage of this opportunity.
Previously, Turkmenistan had expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation with Iran’s northern ports — particularly Amirabad Port to expand trade and freight operations within the North–South Corridor framework.
