GEF to Allocate $15–20 Million for Joint Turkmenistan-FAO Projects

Turkmenistan and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have signed four new projects with total funding of $15–20 million, to be provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This was announced on February 5, 2026, at a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan on the country’s cooperation with the FAO, according to nCa.

The event was attended by representatives of Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry, the diplomatic corps, international organizations, and media outlets.

Deputy Foreign Minister Myahri Byashimova and FAO Deputy Director-General and Regional Representative for Europe and Central Asia Viorel Gutu, who participated via videoconference, delivered statements.

According to the briefing, Turkmenistan and FAO currently implement more than 30 joint projects covering agricultural digitalization, sustainable cotton production, pest control, animal identification systems, and cereal crop protection.

In addition, a new Country Framework Program for Cooperation between Turkmenistan and FAO for 2026–2030 has been prepared.

The new GEF-funded projects aim to develop sustainable agri-food systems and enhance climate resilience in the agricultural sector.

Earlier, in December 2025, Turkmenistan and FAO signed an agreement establishing an FAO representation in the country and providing technical assistance.
