Cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is moving to a phase of targeted, practical implementation across key areas, including trade, connectivity, the energy transition and digital development, ESCAP Deputy Executive Secretary Shombi Sharp told Trend.
ESCAP, working jointly with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe and the United Nations country team, is engaging with the government of Turkmenistan to advance the Sustainable Development Goals, Sharp said. With 2030 approaching, the partnership is focusing on trade, innovation, the energy transition and data development.
Sharp highlighted Turkmenistan’s leading role in advancing sustainable transport and regional connectivity, as well as the potential for cooperation under ESCAP’s Green Energy Corridor initiative and in the digital economy.
In January 2026, an ESCAP delegation led by Sharp visited Turkmenistan to attend the SPECA Economic Forum 2026, held Jan. 21–22 in Ashgabat.
