National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, during a visit to the Republic of Austria, outlined Turkmenistan’s position on the situation in the Middle East and the risks of its spread to the Caspian region.
In an interview with domestic media, Berdimuhamedov said Ashgabat views the current situation as a source of serious concern, given the region’s geographic proximity. According to Berdimuhamedov, any conflicts should be resolved exclusively through peaceful political and diplomatic means, a principle that remains a cornerstone of the country’s foreign policy.
Particular attention was given to the issue of weapons of mass destruction. Turkmenistan advocates for their complete prohibition and participates in key international agreements on arms control, including the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty. The country is also part of the Central Asian Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone.
Berdimuhamedov noted that the use of such weapons would lead to severe consequences for the population, the environment and the economy, stressing the need for a high level of responsibility from the international community.
Addressing the situation in the Caspian region, the chairman of the Halk Maslahaty recalled the long-standing cooperation among the Caspian littoral states and the significance of the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, signed in 2018. The document establishes the region as a zone of peace and prohibits the military presence of non-Caspian states.
Turkmenistan expressed concern over strikes on the territory of one of the Caspian states and stated that military activity in the region is unacceptable. Ashgabat is considering supporting a joint statement by the Caspian states aimed at preventing escalation and maintaining regional security.
National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov also addressed the International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum, proposing a number of measures aimed at stabilizing energy markets and strengthening international cooperation.
