Turkmenistan has been unanimously elected to the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development for the 2027–2030 term. The decision was adopted April 8 at U.N. headquarters in New York during elections to subsidiary bodies of the U.N. Economic and Social Council.
The country will begin its term on Jan. 1, 2027, with the mandate running through Dec. 31, 2030, the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations said Monday.
The election is seen as recognition of Turkmenistan’s achievements and contributions to international and regional scientific and technological cooperation. It also expands the country’s opportunities to participate in the global agenda covering science, innovation, digitalization and sustainable development.
The Commission on Science and Technology for Development is a functional body of the U.N. Economic and Social Council, established in 1992 to promote the use of science and technology in achieving sustainable development goals. Its secretariat operates under the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva.
