The World Customs Organization (WCO) noted positively the progress of modernization of Turkmenistan’s customs system and reaffirmed its readiness to continue supporting the effective work of the organization’s Regional Training Centre in the country, the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Belgium reported on Friday.
WCO Secretary-General Ian Saundersgave the positive assessment during a meeting with Chairman of the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan Maksat Hudaykuliyev held on the sidelines of the 147th and 148th sessions of the WCO Council, taking place from June 25–27 in Brussels.
During the meeting, Hudaykuliyev briefed the WCO chief on ongoing efforts to modernize customs infrastructure, improve the operations of customs posts and introduce modern approaches to customs administration. He highlighted the work of the WCO Regional Training Centre in Turkmenistan, noting the country’s readiness to host regional training events and share accumulated practical experience.
Saunders recalled his working visit to Turkmenistan during the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, when he visited the Turkmenbashi International Seaport and became familiar with the country’s modern transport and logistics infrastructure.
At the end of the meeting, Hudaykuliyev said that Turkmenistan would continue to improve its customs system, strengthen international cooperation and expand the exchange of practical experience.
