German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen has been nominated to succeed Jean-Claude Juncker and lead the European Commission following marathon negotiations among EU leaders in Brussels.
Von der Leyen would be the first woman in the commission job.
She will be joined by Charles Michel, the Belgian prime minister, as European Council president and Josep Borrell Fontelles, Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, as EU foreign policy chief.
European Union leaders also agreed Tuesday to name Frenchwoman Christine Lagarde, current Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, as the new head of the European Central Bank.
Charles Michel can take up his post in November without other formalities. The others must be endorsed by the European Parliament.
