Historical sources indicate the correct determination of favorable places for underground sources at the foot of the mountains, where kyarizes (underground water gathering galleries) were dug to provide the population with drinking water and obtain a rich crop of white wheat, barley and corn from the fertile Turkmen land.
The kyariz in the eastern part of the center of Serhetabat etrap in Mary velayat, dug in 1905 at 345-350 meters above sea level, has served the local population for 114 years. The water of this kyariz does not dry out.
At present, 240 cubic meters of drinking water are being pumped out of the kyariz per day and provided to 673 farms. Flowing water from the kyariz fills two 500 cu.m reservoirs which provide the population with drinking water. The local population recognizes the kyariz as the "Source of Abundance" and "Sacred Water".
The repair and restoration works of the outer and inner parts of the kyariz are constantly carried out by the experts of the housing and economic department of Serkhetabad responsible for its maintenance.
