Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan to Lay Trans-Caspian Fiber Optic Communication Line
The need for the exchange of information between continents will lead to an increase in the exchange of Internet traffic from 200-400 gigabits per second to 4-5 TB per second.

Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan signed an interstate agreement on the organization of activities for the joint construction, ownership and use of the fiber-optic communication line along the Azerbaijan-Turkmenistan route along the bottom of the Caspian Sea.

The parties signed the agreement within the framework of the 12th Turkmentel-2019 telecommunications exhibition.

The cable will run from Siyazan to Turkmenbashi. Azerbaijan’s AzerTelecom and Turkmenistan’s Turkmentelecom are the telecommunication operators of the project.

The implementation of this project will strengthen the partnership in improving telecommunication transit routes between Asia and Europe.

The telecommunication company Türkmentelecom and the limited liability company AzerTelecom have carried out joint work on the project for the construction of this line.

The possibilities of joint activities in the field of communications and telecommunications were considered during a meeting with the Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan, Mr. Masatoshi Ishida. In particular, the Japanese side expressed readiness to assist in laying an underwater optical fiber cable between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan.

According to statistics, the population of Asia exceeds 4 billion, in Europe there are more than 990 million people. The need for the exchange of information between continents will lead to an increase in the exchange of Internet traffic from 200-400 gigabits per second to 4-5 TB per second.

The increase in local telephone numbers has led to an increase in the number of international and long-distance communication channels. A 708-kilometer section of the Trans-Asian-European fiber-optic communication system runs through the territory of Turkmenistan. The 27 thousand kilometer fiber-optic communication system starts at the city of Urumqi, China and runs till the city of Frankfurt, Germany.

Turkmenistan currently has five international junctions of the main fiber-optic communication lines laid across the country - Ashgabat-Badzhigiran (Iran), Serhetabat-Herat (Afghanistan), Imamnazar-Akina (Afghanistan), Turkmenabat-Buhara (Uzbekistan) and Garabogaz-Fetisov (Kazakhstan). The number of Internet users over the same period has increased in the country by more than 500 thousand.
