UNESCO Lists Turkmen Carpet Weaving as Humanity’s Intangible Cultural Heritage
Traditional Turkmen carpet making art has been added to UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Traditional Turkmen carpet making art has been added to UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The decision was made at the 14th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, which took place on December 9-14 in the capital of Columbia, Bogota.

“Inclusion of the Turkmen national art of carpet weaving on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List vividly proves that the world community recognizes our amazing carpets as a monument of art,” said President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov congratulating the carpet weavers and the people of Turkmenistan.

At the initiative of Turkmenistan, Ancient Merv, Koneurgench, and Ancient Nisa were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the national epos “Gorogly” and the Turkmen national art of singing and dance “Kushtdepi” were included in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
