Turkmenistan, UN Sign Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2021-2025

The Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Elena Panova signed the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2021-2025 at a ceremony in Ashgabat.

During the presentation and signing ceremony at Yyldyz hotel on Saturday, the participants said the document aims to strengthen cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN in various areas, including maintaining economic stability and growth, protecting social rights of the population, improving the healthcare system and preserving ecological balance. 

The new Cooperation Framework involves the participation of more UN agencies in its implementation than in the currently operating agreement.

During the briefing following the ceremony, Elena Panova said the UN’s relations with Turkmenistan reached the strategic level of cooperation.

Panova said the first-class investments in strengthening broad-based governance will provide a strong and prosperous institutional and regulatory framework, adding that such condition is the key to ensuring long-term sustainable development, especially for countries with rich natural resources.

The UN coordinator emphasized that the strategic partnership of the UN system with financial institutions and development banks will help create conditions for stimulating entrepreneurship and attract foreign direct investments.

During his speech, Turkmen Foreign Minister Meredov underlined the constructive character of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN structures, adding that the signed document will serve as a guide for joint actions of the Government of Turkmenistan and the UN till 2025.

The event gathered heads and representatives of a number of ministries and departments of Turkmenistan, as well as the heads and representatives of the diplomatic missions and international organizations accredited in Turkmenistan, representatives of public organizations, local and foreign journalists.
