The Turkish conglomerate Ronesans and the Algerian state oil giant Sonatrach plan to commission a polypropylene (PP) plant with a capacity of 450 thousand tons per year in 2025, the price assessment agency Argus Media reported on Tuesday.
The construction of the new $1.7 billion plant will begin in the near future in Turkey's newly established Ceyhan industrial zone, close to the ports of Mersin and Iskenderun and regions with high petrochemicals demand.
Oil company Sonatrach will supply the new plant with around 550 thousand tons of raw materials annually until 2040.
The launch of the plant will allow Turkey, which imported 2 million tons of PP in 2020, to reduce its purchases abroad.
Petkim plant in Aliaga is currently the sole PP manufacturer in Turkey. It has the capacity to produce 150 thousand tons of PP a year.
