Researchers in Dashoguz velayat focus on developing cotton production through scientific selection of new high-yield varieties, as reported by the official media of Turkmenistan on Monday.
Last year, they began production trials for a new medium-fiber variety called 'Dashoguz-150,' developed by Ch. Seyitmuradov, head of the Dashoguz velayat division of selection and seed production of cotton at the Scientific Research Institute of Cotton Farming within the Ministry of Agriculture of Turkmenistan. Farmers planted this variety across 2.5 hectares.
The yield reached an average of 35 centners per hectare. 'Dashoguz-150' expands the popular "Gubadag" series and meets contemporary agricultural standards while performing comparably to established regional varieties. The developer highlighted that this new variety offers improved germination rates suited for local conditions and enhanced resistance to diseases.
Researchers also conducted trials for another medium-fiber variety, 'Jeyhun-16,' which showed positive results. Ongoing evaluations will help determine the readiness of these new varieties for wider production.
To promote cotton farming in northern Turkmenistan, the strategy emphasizes boosting yields through more efficient management of land and water resources, including the development of new varieties tailored to local growing conditions. Local breeders remain committed to creating cotton varieties that meet the needs of the domestic textile industry.
