Turkmen Scientists Extract Valuable Antioxidant from Local Grapes

Scientists at the Biotechnology Laboratory of the International Science and Technology Park under the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan have developed a method to extract a powerful antioxidant — resveratrol — from the red grape variety “Late Vavilov.” The invention’s copyright has been registered with the State Service for Intellectual Property under Turkmenistan’s Ministry of Finance and Economy, Turkmenistan’s official media reported on Thursday.

During the study, researchers extracted resveratrol from various parts of the grapevine, including callus tissue, grape skin, shoots, seeds, and pomace. In addition to the main variety, the experiment included other grape types such as Terbash, Ashgabat, Taifi, Cabernet, and Gara Uzyum.

Phenolic compounds with high antioxidant activity were also obtained from the leaves of these grape varieties collected at the end of the growing season.

The “Late Vavilov” grape variety was developed between 1970 and 1978 at the Turkmen Experimental Station of the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking (VNIIR) by crossing the “Ichkimar” and “Janjal Kara” varieties. The grape clusters are large and conical in shape, with elongated cylindrical berries.

Resveratrol is known as a natural antioxidant with proven benefits for cardiovascular health and memory. Experts estimate it may also slow skin aging by protecting collagen from degradation and could play a role in cancer prevention. Additional protective effects come from other grape components, including polyphenols, ellagic acid, and vitamin C.
