Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Serdar Muhammetdurdyyev met with Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Turkmenistan Jassim Mohammed Al-Attar at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 9, 2026. During the talks, Muhammetdurdyyev expressed gratitude to the Iraqi side for the decision to open the diplomatic mission of the Republic of Iraq in Ashgabat.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Turkmen side emphasized its readiness to provide all necessary support for the full operation of the diplomatic mission of the friendly state.

The opening of the Iraqi Embassy in Ashgabat will contribute to further strengthening and development of political, diplomatic, trade, economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries, the report said.

During the meeting, the sides also underlined that high-level meetings and political consultations between the foreign ministries of Turkmenistan and Iraq play an important role in the development of bilateral relations.

The interlocutors discussed prospects for expanding trade and economic cooperation, including establishing contacts between the business communities of the two countries. They also noted broad opportunities to enhance cultural and humanitarian cooperation in areas such as science, education, sports and tourism.

The diplomats also noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkmenistan and the Republic of Iraq in 2009, cooperation between the two friendly countries has steadily developed in various areas, including at the international level.
