The number of small ruminants in Turkmenistan’s Mary Province exceeded 5.9 million as of April 1. Agricultural associations account for 726,000 animals, while the private sector holds 5.226 million. The figures were reported by the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper on Wednesday.
The lambing campaign in the Murghab Valley began in early March. Southern districts, including Tagtabazar and Turkmenkala, were among the first to start operations. Preparations for the winter season proved effective: farms secured planned feed volumes by late October, ensuring uninterrupted livestock maintenance during colder months.
The Mary oasis remains one of Turkmenistan’s leading livestock regions, accounting for roughly one-third of the country’s total small ruminant population. Within the region, Tagtabazar district stands out as the clear leader, concentrating nearly a quarter of the Murghab Valley’s herd.
In early May last year, the number of small ruminants in Turkmenistan reached 6.4 million head.
