Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov reported on preparations for the official visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to Turkmenistan during a Cabinet of Ministers meeting held via videoconference on Friday, according to Turkmenistan’s official media.
According to the report, Turkmenistan and Malaysia established diplomatic relations on May 17, 1992, and have since developed close bilateral ties. A total of 43 interstate, intergovernmental and interagency agreements form the legal framework of cooperation between the two countries. The sides also cooperate within international organizations, including the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement.
As stressed, that high-level exchanges have played an important role in strengthening political dialogue. The President of Turkmenistan has visited Malaysia four times, while Malaysian prime ministers have made five visits to Turkmenistan. President Serdar Berdimuhamedov’s official visit to Malaysia in December 2024 elevated bilateral cooperation to a new level.
Malaysia remains one of Turkmenistan’s long-standing economic partners, particularly in the energy sector. Meredov added that preparations for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit are underway and that its results are expected to contribute to the further development of bilateral relations.
After hearing the report, President Berdimuhamedov highlighted the positive development of Turkmen-Malaysian cooperation and instructed officials to ensure comprehensive preparations for the visit.
Earlier, Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia’s national energy company, PETRONAS, was exploring opportunities to participate in prospective gas projects in Turkmenistan. He also announced that a Malaysian delegation would visit Turkmenistan in mid-June to discuss future cooperation in the energy sector.
