How did Black Friday begin?

Black Friday originated in the USA. As Thanksgiving always falls on the fourth Thursday in November, the following Friday is often observed as an unofficial holiday. Since 1952, this day has been considered the beginning of holiday shopping season in the United States.

By 2000, Black Friday had gained popularity throughout the United States. Due to the influx of buyers and turmoil in shopping centers, stores began to open early. For this reason, in 2011, stores began to open on the night of Thursday to Friday.

With the popularity of e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Black Friday has gained popularity all over the world. For the first time, such sales in Europe began in Romania. The two main retail chains of the country reported that on Black Friday 2014 the volume of goods sold reached nearly €60 million.

By 2016, with the rise of the U.S. tech giants’ popularity in various parts of the world, Black Friday became one of the most popular events.

Online trading platforms began to conduct a large-scale Black Friday advertising campaigns, as a result of which in 2017 the results exceeded all expectations: many platforms could not cope with the load due to the excessive number of traffic and were eventually closed.

Online Black Friday sales lasts several days.

This year, Black Friday lands on Friday, November 29. A sales campaign has already begun at Amazon, a week before Black Friday.

According to the 2017 United States Black Friday sales data, 174 million people made a purchase, the amount of purchases amounted to about $60 billion.
