Scientists at the International Scientific and Technological Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan are developing technologies to extract valuable bioactive compounds from topinambur, including inulin, resveratrol, and a glucose-fructose syrup composition, Turkmenistan’s state news agency reported on Thursday.

The innovation has already received a copyright certificate from the State Intellectual Property Service under the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan.

Inulin, found in topinambur, is a powerful prebiotic known to improve gut microbiota, strengthen the immune system, and regulate metabolism. Based on this compound, researchers have also developed a natural sugar substitute — a fructose-glucose syrup — which may be in demand for dietary and diabetic nutrition.

The newly developed syrups are available in both liquid and dry forms and can be used across the food, pharmaceutical, and agro-industrial sectors, ranging from beverage and confectionery production to animal feed and functional nutrition.

The research project is led by Altyn Rahmanova, head of the biotechnology laboratory.
