Work Schedule: Full-time - 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday
Promotion Potential: LE-8

Duty Location(s): 1 Vacancy in Ashgabat, TM
Duties
Serves as Translator/ Interpreter for the Executive Office and other Mission offices as time permits. Accurately and confidently interprets confidential discussions and meetings with high-level Turkmen government officials, including during negotiations on inter-governmental agreements and during official and representational events. Assist with wide range of protocol-related issues such as representational events in CMR and DCMR, major receptions such as Embassy 4th of July reception and annual Business Forum reception, among others responsible for keeping the Embassy’s contacts in the Contact Management Database. Provide guidance on protocol-related issues and serves as a backup during absence of Supervisory Protocol Assistant.
Qualifications and Evaluations
Experience:
- Minimum three (3) years of translating/interpreting or administrative experience with a strong protocol component.
- At least one (1) year working with a local government office, an international organization, or a diplomatic mission in a role with a strong protocol or translation/interpreting focused component.
Job knowledge:
- Proven experience in interpretation and translation in a diplomatic or international setting is required. Excellent knowledge of Turkmen political structure, culture, and social mores. Comprehensive knowledge of general etiquette and social standards.
Education:
- A University Degree in linguistics, international relations, or diplomacy or similar field is required and must be provided at time of application.
- Certification or diploma in interpretation or translation from either an educational institution or a certified interpretation organization (courses/training) is required and must be provided at time of application.
Language: Please indicate your level of language skill for all required languages listed below. Applicants who do not indicate and provide documentation verifying that they meet the language level as listed below may be disqualified from consideration.
- English level IV (Fluent) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required. This may be tested.
- Turkmen level IV (Fluent) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required. This may be tested.
- Russian level IV (Fluent) Reading/Writing/Speaking is required. This may be tested.
Candidates MUST present language scores from a certifying language body in order to be considered. Documentation of Native Language may be demonstrated through University education in that language. Accepted language institutes include: TOEIC, TOEFL, IBT, IELTS, FSI, CamLa, CEFR, MET, Bertlitz, MClass. Language ability, both written and spoken, may be tested during the interview process.
Skills and abilities: Excellent organizational skills to assist in planning and directing functions. Effective written communication; timeliness and accuracy in drafting, typing, editing, and translating a wide variety of documents into English, Russian and Turkmen. Working level of Outlook, Word and Excel programs and ability to learn CRM contact management application. Ability to conduct consecutive interpretation at a high-level meetings at the Cabinet of Ministers, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and others including with Ministers; good knowledge of terminology in wide range of topics to include politics, economy, security, environment, energy, etc. Excellent interpersonal skills and strong intercultural awareness. Flexibility in adapting to changing tasks and competing priorities. Must be able to work with a minimum level of supervision. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to work independently and proactively. Must have and maintain a high level of discretion. Willingness to work extended hours, including weekends, holidays, and late evenings.
