Work Schedule: Part-time - 20 hours per week, Flexible Schedule. May have to work some nights and weekends.

Duties

The primary purpose of Part-Time Embassy Translator/Interpreter is to provide essential language services to the Embassy community in order to facilitate and ensure effective communication across the Mission, as well as to Embassy officials and some members of the Turkmenistan public as required.

The incumbent will be required to interpret live during Embassy events including Town Halls, trainings, and other events conducted by the Embassy where the translation services are required.

They will also be responsible for translating Embassy materials and communications (training, email, policy, notices, other documents) from English into Turkmen and Russian and vice versa.

The incumbent will provide interpretation and translation services primarily for the Management Section (HR, Facilities, Finance, GSO, etc), but for the other U.S. Embassy Sections as needed.

This position is part-time, requiring up to 20 hours per week, with the flexibility to work varied hours throughout the work week and evenings and weekends as needed.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

  • All selected candidates must be able to obtain and hold a Public Trust security clearance.
  • All selected candidates will be subject to a background investigation and may be subject to a pre-employment medical exam.
  • Selected candidate must be able to begin working within a reasonable period of time 1 month (2 weeks preferred) upon receipt of agency authorization and/or clearances/certifications or their candidacy may end.

Education:

  • University degree in Linguistics, Translation/ Interpretation, English, Communications, Business or related field

Experience:

  • Two (2) years demonstrated experience in translation and interpretation from Turkmen and Russian to English and vice versa.

Language:

  • English: Level 4 (FLUENT) Speaking/Reading/Writing is required. This may be tested.
  • Turkmen: Level 4 (FLUENT) Speaking/Reading/Writing is required. This may be tested.
  • Russian: Level 4 (FLUENT) Speaking/Reading/Writing is required. This may be tested.

Candidates may present language scores from a certifying language body in lieu of language testing prior the interview. For a language certification score to be accepted in lieu of language testing, the score must be from an accepted language institute.  Accepted language institutes include: TOEIC, TOEFL, IBT, IELTS, FSI, CamLa, CEFR, MET, Bertlitz, MClass. Language ability, both written and spoken, may be tested during the interview process.

Job Knowledge:

  • Exceptional oral and written communication; timeliness and accuracy in drafting, typing, editing, and translating a wide variety of documents in English, Turkmen, and Russian. When needed, simultaneous interpreting in a variety of venues. Excellent interpersonal skills and strong intercultural awareness. Flexibility in adapting to changing tasks and completing priorities. Ability to set priorities. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Ability to plan and schedule major events from overall conception to final details. Working level of Outlook, Word and Excel programs and ability to learn Goldmine application. Ability to work independently and proactively. Willingness to work extended hours, including weekends, holidays, and late evenings.
